Notes from Madeira

Madeira Carro Copo

In July, whilst speaking to Carrie over the phone and telling her I was going on holiday to Madeira, I heard, nearing the end of the conversation through a smile: how about writing a piece for the blog? Madeira is our best market outside of the continent.

Once on the island, I decided to phone the person responsible for the invasion of ‘Cortes de Cima’ wines into the Madeiran market. Ricardo Silva is the proprietor of a distribution company called ‘Copo‘ and it was the work of this friendly Madeiran (and the quality of the wine!) that turned ‘Cortes de Cima’ into a global brand in Madeira. The ‘Chaminé‘, with its quality-price ratio, conquered the market, finding itself on practically all the shelves and wine lists on the island. Of the more costly reds, the ‘Incógnito‘ is the most sought after. And, in the middle of conversation, an idea arose, of having lunch with one of the best chefs working in Madeira, which ‘Copo’ organized.

But that is a topic for another post.

Cheers,

Nuno Borges
