Chaminé

History
Chaminé - pronounced: sha-min-E; translation: chimney.
The name Chaminé originates from one of our vineyard plots - ‘Chaminé de Gião’, where originally the grapes used in the wine were grown.
This is our most popular wine, boasting a consistent track record, which has attracted many fans both in Portugal and abroad. A juicy, ripe, easy drinking, lighter bodied style of wine, which also happens to be lower in alcohol. Chaminé is bottled early, usually within 6 months of harvest time and without any oak ageing. Best drunk young, but will improve with short term cellaring. Mainly Aragonez and Syrah, blended with other Portuguese varieties.

Winter and spring were cold and wet, resulting in delayed budbreak, uneven pollination, fewer bunches and smaller berries, in especially the Aragonez and Touriga Nacional. Summer was kick started with a mini-hot spell in June, but followed by 2 steady months of dry, warm days and cool nights, optimal growing conditions.
With the exception of a short rainy spell which quickly passed, the harvest weather was the finest in memory, of dry, warm sunny days, affording us the luxury of fine tuning the harvest tempo according to the ripeness of a particular grape variety, a particular vineyard parcel, and even a particular row of vines.
Vinification
Selected fruit, handpicked at optimum maturity. Fermented without stems and controlled temperature with frequent delestage (rack-and-return). This wine is filtered and bottled early to maintain clean, youthful, ripe fruit flavours.
Tasting Notes
The color is deep dense red with violet hues. The aromas are subdued but open up to reveal red berry fruits, dark cherries and raspberry jam with some earthiness and hints of vanilla. The palate, which is solid and compact, shows abundant fruit flavor with mouth filling tannins which provide balance and structure.

Reviews
Medium-bodied, with a crisp texture and slightly smoky flavors of dark plum, raspberry and licorice that linger on the finish. -Kim Marcus WS Daily Wine Picks 5.2.2010
Fresh, fruity, juicy wine with bright raspberry flavors lifted by crisp acidity. The character is light, with just enough tannins to give structure. - R.V. (12/15/2009)
The 2008 CHAMINE Tinto, the winery’s entry level red, is principally Syrah and Aragonez. Grapey, young and exuberant, this is a wine that is long in fun. Aromatic and flavorful, it is also bright and sunny, not just fruit forward, thankfully. There is not much mid-palate concentration, but its intensity of flavor may make it a party favorite for many given its attractive price range. Drink now-2013. - Mark Squires (12/01/2010)
