Touriga Nacional

Facts

Lifted violet and dark berry fruit aromatics, elegant intense and long palate.

Best known as one of the 5 main varieties used for Port wine, further south here in the Alentejo it’s fruit develops a highly floral and aromatic character. It is a low producer, with both small bunches and berries.

Previous vintages have won numerous gold medals and trophies, including IWC Best Portuguese Red Trophy (2005), IWC Touriga Trophy (2003), and the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wine List (2002).

Vintage 2007

A cooler and delayed growing season resulted in grapes with lower baumé, and wines with less alcohol but more elegance. Splendid weather at both the start and end of the harvest, of sunny, warm days and cool nights, was interrupted by a spell of inclement thunderstorms. The unusual September humidity dashed our hopes for a potential superlative vintage, into just a better than average year.

Vinification

Made exclusively from selected Touriga Nacional grapes hand picked at optimum maturity from chosen sites in our own vineyards. Fermented without stems under temperature control, frequent delestage, followed by extended skin maceration to enhance varietal fruit characters, and to provide tannin structure and balance. Aged for 8 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes

Spicy, perfumed aroma of violets with ripe blueberry and blackberry fruits. Solid palate with great fruit intensity, some leather notes adding complexity. Well structured with firm tannins and excellent balance. Will improve with bottle age but showing well already.

Reviews

Elegant in the mid-palate and quite precise, this wine is earthy on first impression, but shows quite a bit of oak thereafter. It is a remarkable graceful wine, while showing some power on the finish. Juicy and easy to drink after aeration at least, it is a lot of fun and has enough structure to be a serious wine.
