Homenagem a Hans Christian Andersen

A special commemorative 100% Syrah launched for the bicentennial of the Danish storyteller Hans Christian Andersen.  In 1991, we were the first ones to plant Syrah in the Alentejo, choosing rootstock from southern Rhone clones.

Vintage 2011

Vintage 2011 experienced new record-breaking climatic extremes, both in winter rainfall and summer heat. A difficult growing season and harvest due to delayed ripening. Fine harvest weather.

Vinification

Made from exclusively from Syrah grapes, grown sustainably in our own vineyards. Fermented without stems under temperature control, frequent delestage, followed by extended skin maceration to enhance varietal fruit characters, and to provide tannin structure and balance. Aged for 8 months in French and American oak barrels.

Tasting Notes

Classy aroma of dark berry fruits, black currant, blueberry and cassis. Well crafted elegant palate showing sweet but solid fruit, well integrated quality oak, great balance, good tannic structure, long and persistent.

Reviews

It’s a powerful wine with a dark side that’s very suitable for those fairy stories. Big tannins, black fruits and a dense structure all promise aging. – Wine Enthusiast

Big, rich and well-spiced, with pure flavors of blueberry, dark plum and cherry. Features notes of dried meat midpalate, followed by a luscious finish of chocolate mousse and cream. Drink now through 2018. – Wine Spectator

A lovely Syrah, fragrant and crisp, with fine flavor on the finish and notable tannins for support. This straddles the stereotypical New and Old World styles. Not particularly earthy, it has a velvety texture with a touch of cream, but its sunny disposition makes it lively and fresh with tension on the finish. With air, it does develop a bit more of those classic Syrah nuances, but it leans more to fruity than complex. It should acquire more complexity with age. While this doesn’t have a lot of mid-palate concentration, it is still likely Cortes de Cima’s best Homenagem yet. - Mark Squires, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
